Lonely Heart The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers is a novel set in a small Southern town in the late 1930’s. McCullers writes about characters who are lonely and rejected. their lives intertwine in a search for friendship and understanding. Many of the characters have a need to be understood, however; none of them ever truly are. One of the characters in the novel, Jake Blount, searches for a sympathetic ear. He appears in the New York Cafe drunk and rowdy talking to everyone and no one. He talks so much the â€Å"words came out of his throat like a cataract† (13). He constantly talks to everyone hoping someone will take the time to really listen and understand. His words come out â€Å"as though a dam inside†¦show more content†¦He also writes Antonapoulos that Blount thinks â€Å"he and I have a secret together but I do not know what it is† (183). Jake Blount thinks Singer understands him when he actually does not. Another character searching for understanding is Dr. Benedict Mady Copeland. Dr. Copeland is a black doctor with ideas that on one seems to understand regardless of how hard he tries to make them comprehend. His daughter, Portia, says that when she was a girl, he was â€Å"all the time studying by hisself† (41). Dr. Copeland is well educated and this separates him from the rest of his family. They do not understand why he has always felt the need to educate them. At a Christmas party, Dr. Copeland talks to the guests about Karl Marx and what he stood for. When he asks if everyone understands, they reply that they do. This makes him wonder if they are answering this way just to please him. He eventually turns to Mr. Singer for understanding. Dr. Copeland thinks Mr. Singer is wise and understands â€Å"the strong true purpose in a way that other white men could not† (114). Mr. Singer admits in a letter to Antonapoulos that he in fact does not understand. John Singer is another character who feels a need for understanding. He is a deaf-mute that everyone else seems to turn to when they need to vent their feelings. Singer does not communicate often unless by pen. He usually watches what everyone else has to say. Personally, a mistake is something that has happened without the full knowledge of the doer, or something that resulted in consequence. No one is perfect, that is for certain. For we are just mere mortals, imperfect beings made full of flaws and limitations. Not everything will go as planned, nor will everything conspire as to our liking. There are to many factors that would affect our actions, factors that might either amplify or completely cancel-out our efforts. Thus we are bound to make mistakes. But these mistakes, these imperfections are not all that bad. Bacon, Roger Essay Roger Bacon was an English Scholastic philosopher, scientist and one of the most influential teachers of the 13th century. He was born in Ilchester, Somersetshire in 1214. Roger Bacon was educated at the universities of Oxford and Paris. He remained in Paris after completing his studies and taught for a while at the University of Paris. When he returned to England in about 1251, he entered the religious order of the Franciscans and lived at Oxford. He carried on active studies and did experimental research in alchemy, optics, and astronomy. Bacon was critical of the methods of learning of the times, and in the late 1260s, at the request of Pope Clement IV, he wrote his Opus Majus (Major Work). In this work he represented the necessity of a reformation in the sciences through different methods of studying languages and nature. The Opus Majus was an encyclopedia of all science, embracing grammar and logic, mathematics, physics, experimental research, and moral philosophy. The response of the pope to Bacons masterpiece is not known, but the work could not in any circumstances have had much effect in Bacons time, because it reached Clement during the period of his fatal illness. Bacons revolutionary ideas about the study of science caused his condemnation by the Franciscans for his heretical views. In 1278 the general of the Franciscan order, Girolamo Masci, later Pope Nicholas IV, forbade the reading of Bacons books and had Bacon arrested. After ten years in prison, Bacon returned to Oxford. He wrote Compendium Studii Theologiae (A Compendium of the Study of Theology, 1292) shortly before his death. Despite his advanced knowledge, Bacon accepted some of the popular but later disproved beliefs of his time, such as the existence of a philosophers stone and the efficacy of astrology. Although many inventions have been credited to him, some of them undoubtedly were derived from the study of Arab scientists. His writings brought new and ingenious views on optics, particularly on refraction; on the apparent magnitude of objects; and on the apparent increase in the size of the sun and moon at the horizon. He found that with sulfur, saltpeter, and charcoal, a substance (now known as gunpowder) could be produced that would imitate lightning and cause explosions. The previous use of gunpowder by the Arabs, however, has since been shown. Bacon considered mathematics, together with experimentation, the only means of arriving at a knowledge of nature. He studied several languages and wrote Latin with great elegance and clarity. Because of his extensive knowledge he was known as Doctor Admira bilis. The natural science is an area of knowledge that studies the physical world such as biology, chemistry, physics. Natural sciences are stationed by observation than reason. To what extent should scientists be held ethical responsible? What are you responsible for? Do you hold a responsibility? Ethical responsibility is when a moral path is being followed which means that and individual is compelled to promote the ethics based on their responsibility. The ethical responsibilities for scientists are formed by society. If it wasn't for society scientists won't do their job of research. Society funds for the research based on the issue. scientists cannot take responsibility for their actions. There is no limitation in science due to the narrow investigation of the unknown world. Research findings are made by the society which lead the scientists to proceed. Personal definition on ethical responsibility is when an individual is involuntary obligated to hold responsibility for an organization. Ethics in science has become important in society. It is unethical to use people to experiment for science as some people may disagree which is why some scientists use animals to test out things as animals are not able to disagree and it is more ethical. Also, we can generalize findings from animals to humans as they could be similar as rats have the same neurons as humans which we could generalize the findings to humans and use that information to understand how neurons work. Science that is unethical leads to a variety of problems even though scientists are continuously finding out new things that would not be found out if they were to do it in an ethical manner. If humans believe that it is unethical to test out their bodies for an experiment, they have the right to disagree which could have problems for the scientist to experiment as they would not be able to investigate using humans and the information for te sting out the animals could be incorrect and not as reliable as it would be to test out humans. They will not be able to find out things if they would constantly enable it to be unethical. One unethical experiment is an experiment of removing brain cells from a live subject. This is a very unethical experiment as it is an invasive surgery with serious risks so it could harm the patient. Although, it is a very beneficial experiment to scientists as it would answer many questions to the public on how the brain works and new things that they would be interested in finding out. Ethics are moral principles that hold responsibility to an individual's behaviors.
